In the region work the 22% of the 66.000 italian researchers. Of these the 24,1% is used in the academic world (the 38.9 at national level), the 75,9 in the private sector. The share of italian researchers on the totla EU is of 6,8%


According to the scorebord regional innovation 2005 (finlombarda and Rosselli Foundation), the Lombardy is fifth if compared with some European regions, with a good balance and a positive impact of the financial system and of the scientific. The region, while maintaining the primacy at national level, has a competitive disadvantage in the areas as industrial research and in overall resources dedicated to research and development .In the first case, the performance of the region appears be conditioned by low value obtained for the measure patent and the relative lack of large industrial groups innovative. In the second case, it is good stress as the region to arrive in fourth position for incidence of private spending in research compared to the total expenditure in R&D.
